B&Q is introducing plastic pot recycling stations at more than 100 of its stores across the UK this year. B&Q shoppers will be able to drop off their unwanted pots, which will then be recycled and turn into new planters.

Mintel comment:

“Sustainability has firmly established itself as a key consideration for consumers. Many are looking to their retailers to help them make sustainable choices, since 44% of consumers prefer shopping at retailers that offer in-store recycling areas (see Mintel’s Ethical Retailing, UK - 2023 Report). This shift underscores an increased expectation for environmentally friendly practices across a wide range of sectors. Recognising this trend, B&Q joins the likes of other garden centres like Dobbies and Squire’s to offer a plant pot recycling service, directly addressing this consumer demand.

Offering the convenience of recycling used plastic plant pots makes it considerably easier for individuals to make sustainable choices, as some 22% of garden shoppers select their retailer based on the availability of on-site recycling services (see Mintel’s upcoming Garden Product Retailing, UK - 2024 Report). This highlights the essential role of retailers in responding to the increasing demand for sustainability, shaping consumer shopping habits through eco-conscious initiatives. By prioritising accessible and practical sustainability efforts, retailers are not only supporting consumer concerns but also contributing to a more sustainable future, strengthening their relationship with environmentally aware consumers.”
